Plain Tiger Butterfly on Knotweed
Sipping nectar by the River Nile in the heart of Cairo, Egypt.
This butterfly species, seen throughout the Middle East, has the alternative name of "Arabian Monarch". Like North America's Monarch butterflies, it is distateful to birds and advertises this through its conspicous colors and markings. Its caterpillars feed on plants of the Old World milkweed group, accumulating unpleasant tasting substances from the host plants.
